Penny for the Guy?
5th November today, anyone else do this as a kid? I remember making a couple of quid one year, me and my mates were well happy, a copy of Beano and Shoot each and Crisps, Tizer and Curly Wurlys all round……..

Does it even happen anymore?

Heard a few councils banned it in the late 90,s, decided it was begging and dangerous unless supervised as kiddies may get mugged for the take! But expect the modern day yoof would turn there nose up not least as it involves making something and no internet, then I expect the diversity and margilisation of minorities and general wokey would be problematic for others not to mention any OH&S worries from the cotton wool wrapping parents

We used to do that every year outside the corner shop in Senrab st, stepney. Used a hitler mask one year. Made a fortune. Well 10 quid anyway.

It’s a bit weird when you think about it

All the people in the country celebrating that capture and killing of a bloke who plotted to blow up Parliament due to it corruption.

It’s a big celebration of government day

Used to do it outside the bookies in Three Colt street in Limehouse. We were more under threat from kids from planning to light our bonfire before 5th November.

I used to do this on a match day back in the 70s as our fans were coming out at 445!
Always a good return especially when we’d won!

I think it is a bit funny that Fawkes was a late-comer to Catesby's Plot and was really just the look-out man.

Yet he gets all the credit.

He did stand up under torture for a little bit I guess. But it was probably mainly down to getting caught first.

Used to see kids doing it at gidea Park Station coming home from work 25 years ago.

Spoke to a mate about it recently who works for the police and basically it was outlawed and classed illegal as a form of begging.

Re: Penny for the Guy?
Surely the stuff about it being banned for being a type of begging isn't true?

Where would that leave trick & treat, carol singers, charity collections etc.?

In these Woke times is it now “Penny for they” or perhaps “Penny for the geezer bird “ etc ?

:-)

Used to play all kinds of nutty games this time of year and fuck about a lot. I guess it was the start of dark evenings but not really cold/shity weather.

Re: Penny for the Guy?
It used to be great fun because we used to organise the collection of money and building of bonfires for ourselves. I cannot remember any organised, sanitised firework displays from my schooldays. Back then things like Celebrating Halloween did not exist for us but it has grown in popularity over the years to now overshadowing firework night.

Oddly though where years ago fireworks were more or less exclusive to bonfire night they now seem to be used throughout the year for a variety of reasons.

The fireworks are used all year because they are available all year. Not sure if any laws or rules changed.

Trick or treat has been made a thing mashed where you advert8se if kids are welcome and no other houses are touched and I suppose with Carol singing (not seen any for years) you have a choice not to open your front door.

As with homeless beggers, penny for the guy was basically in the street in people's faces.

These days it's "Bitcoin for the non-binary Effigy (or we'll wipe all the data off your phone!)."

Re: Penny for the Guy?
Been googling and can't find anything about it being banned.

I remember it being a thing when growing up in the 90s, think its just naturally died out, like white dog shit etc.

Re: Penny for the Guy?
Used to do this with one of my brother’s in the 60s and all went into buying fireworks.

My Dad used to find an old suit, tie the sleeves and ankles with string and filled it with newspaper. The guy’s face mask went, but god knows what we used as the head?

We used to do quite well outside our newsagent. In those days there were many people waiting for the Evening Standard to arrive with the football and racing results. The shop shut at 7, but it seemed the paper always arrived at 6.45. There was ‘frenzied’ buying fir 15 minutes and that was it.

With the money raised it used to go fireworks and we would seek out what we considered the best fireworks for our money, usually Pains-Wessex, then Standard, the rest of the brands weren’t very good.

Nothing wrong for asking for a payment for a bit of creativity.

Re: Penny for the Guy?
As regards the firewirks you can let them off until 1am on Diwali & Chinese New year but only until 12am on bonfire night.
Diwali lasts five days but here in north west London the fireworks seem to go on for about a fortnight at all times of the day and night.

Re: Penny for the Guy?
used to love bonfire night. rival crews roaming round trying to vandalise the other lot's guy, one lot just pushing someone round in a wheelchair and a straw hat thinking that's enough to get the old dears to cough up. then off to bonfire night where a massive free for all fire was set up and everyone would drag their old settees to chuck on it, with the inevitable propane tank snuck in to give it a proper sense of occasion. then off to the fireworks at the beach where the local fireman would turn up half cut and essentially shell the beach from a wobbly floating pontoon like something from dunkirk.
